Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork which uses a combination of pressure and stretching, as well as manipulation techniques to help maintain a balance in the body. Shiatsu basically translates to finger pressure in Japanese. The “shi” meaning finger and “atsu” meaning pressure. It is based on Traditional Oriental Medicine which suggests that we all have a flow within our bodies or life force. This flow, also known as chi or qi in Chinese and ki in Japanese, is what maintains this balance or homeostasis. This flow runs through specific energy channels or meridians and when there is trauma to the body, be it physical or emotional, and these channels are disrupted there will be disease or dysfunction.
In the Orient, it is believed that energy circulates and nourishes the person through these meridians. These energy channels branch out from deep in the organs out to its main branches to smaller ones until finally reaching the outer part of the body or the skin and then back again. This is similar in pattern to the major body systems, such as the circulatory or lymphatic systems.Shiatsu helps create balance within these energy channels. It is thought to calm the nervous system which improves circulation, relieves muscle tension, and reduces stress. Shiatsu is also known to alleviate a wide variety of other symptoms in the body such as diarrhea, indigestion and anxiety.
Shiatsu incorporates amma, acupressure, stretching, and Western massage to unblock energy blockages and reintroduce a steady flow of chi within the body. It is not intended for work on localized muscles and joints but on the overall energy system of the client. Amma is traditional Japanese massage and when combined with stretching and massage techniques such as rubbing, tapping and applying pressure to specifics areas or certain points in the body it is thought to treat disease, relieve discomfort and maintain physical and mental well being.
Shiatsu, unlike other types of bodywork, uses no oils and the person remains fully clothed throughout the session. The treatment is usually done on the floor with a mat or on a lowered massage table. The treatment usually starts with light stretching and techniques to manipulate and help stimulate the movement of energy and to prepare and relax the muscles. Shiatsu usually consists of more than just finger pressure as the thumbs, palms, knees, and/or elbows are also used.
The pressure applied may be to specific points on the body or to broad areas as well. This just depends on the particular needs of the individual. At times, the pressure may be gentle and calming and other times, may be deeper and more stimulating. Some rocking and maybe even gentle holding may also be included in the session. Treatments last between from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. At the end of the session, the practitioner may also include breathing exercises to maintain relaxation after the treatment.
